A lie detector is called a polygraph (meaning "multiple writing"), presumably, because it measures and records various involuntary physiological activities, including blood pressure, skin resistivity, pulse rate, respiration, and sweating. The same name has also been used to refer to a device for producing copies of written, printed, or pictorial matter.
